KEYNOTE: Lessons from the 2020s for How to Be More Efficient, Effective, and Joyfully Balanced
Thursday October 10, 2024 10:00am - 11:20am CDT

The 2020s haven’t been easy for many educators. Having to guide students through staff shortages, rapid societal shifts, and a pandemic and its aftermath put a great strain on many teachers. Further, the news around education has so often been overwhelmingly negative, with each new news report making the current political disputes, increasing student mental health challenges, and funding issues feel intractable.
These struggles and issues are real, and yet lost against this backdrop is that the 2020s have also quietly offered more innovation and fresh solutions to old problems than ever before. Losing the face-to-face classroom for a while gave us a better sense for what matters, and recent years have seen a renaissance in our understanding of learning, the brain, and best practices.
Lessons from the 2020s—led by full-time classroom teacher and author Matthew Johnson—looks to share what we’ve learned from this decade so far to take on the multitude of challenges we face in a better, more balanced, and, with some luck, a more joyful way.

Thursday October 10, 2024 1:40pm - 2:30pm CDT
This space is for teachers in years 1-5 of their career (including preservice teachers). We'll do some active reading, writing, and talking about early career triumphs and struggles and how to sustain ourselves in this profession. This will be a brave space where vulnerability and authenticity are valued. We will place an emphasis on work/life balance and culturally responsive practices in the English classroom. This session will be adaptive to attendee needs, so feel free to come with personal concerns or areas where you need extra support.  NOTE: In order to maintain the integrity of this session, this is not a space for teacher educators, mentors, or veteran educators.

Good Grammar: Creating Joyful and Affirming Grammar and Language Curriculum That Works and Works for More Students
Thursday October 10, 2024 1:40pm - 2:30pm CDT
Grammar and language instruction has long been, in the words of Brock Haussamen in Grammar Alive!, “the skunk at the garden party of the language arts" that turns many eager learners into disengaged participants. But why? How does grammar—something so relevant and essential that we use it in the creation of every syllable we say, write, or think—often become one of the dullest and most disconnected parts of the ELA classroom?
Good Grammar will explore this question and offer practical, on-the-ground solutions from a full-time teacher for how to make grammar and language instruction more accessible, practical, and connected to students’ reading, writing, and most importantly, the deep well of language knowledge they bring with them already. The title—Good Grammar—seeks to remind us that grammar doesn’t have to be boring or feel punitive. Instead, it can be a force for good for more students, affirming who they are, honoring the language expertise they bring with them, and helping them to bring their unique voices to the page.

Learn to Write with Ruta: Putting Your Stories on the Page
Thursday October 10, 2024 1:40pm - 2:30pm CDT
Even though writing scholars like Thomas Newkirk emphasize that narrative is the backbone of all writing, school curricula emphasize argumentative writing instead. How might we create more space for narrative writing? How do we teach it in ways that it does not lose its sparkle once it becomes "schoolified"? Using Ruta Sepetys' book You the Story: A Writer's Guide to Craft through Memory as a mentor text, this session will invite students and teachers to view narrative with a storyteller's eye. Bring your notebook and be prepared to write!

SPARK: Reading Rural YA Literature: A Book Club for Teachers SPARK: Up for a Thought Experiment? Using Philosophy in the ELA Classroom SPARK VIDEO: Bot or Not? Facilitating Student Analysis of AI Writing
Thursday October 10, 2024 1:40pm - 2:30pm CDT
SPARK VIDEO: Bot or Not?: All ELA educators are thinking about the growth of AI and its impact on writing instruction. AI tools can help our students with certain tasks, and they can be a hindrance in others. In this session, I will share a game I play with my students to help them recognize the benefits and drawbacks of AI-generated writing. We call the game "Bot or Not," and it's fast, fun, and easily customized. Participants in this session will learn, laugh, and leave with tools to help students engage in authentic conversations around the things AI writing can and cannot do.

SPARK Rural YA: This spark session will share findings and insights from previous book club discussions with Iowa teachers. Additionally, there will be an opportunity for teachers to sign up for the Spring 2025 iteration of the Reading Rural Book Club. Attendees will walk away with Rural YA Literature titles to share with their students.

SPARK Thought Experiment: I believe students like to go deeper than they think they can with their learning! Therefore, several years ago I began teaching a philosophy unit in my Advanced Placement Language and Composition classes.  In this session I will explain how I set up the unit (student-led Socratic seminars), offer a list of philosophical essays, and include a few philosophical thought experiments. There's more than a trolley problem!

What I Know to Be True about Teaching Writing
Thursday October 10, 2024 1:40pm - 2:30pm CDT
Marci Rickords, Kaitlin Ritland, Quinn Dreasler, and Rachel Wagner, alums of Iowa Writing Project's Level I Institute 2023-2024, came away from class with a clear sense of the pedagogy and instructional practices it takes to create confident and capable student writers. Join these teacher-learners/teacher-leaders as they share what they know to be true about teaching writing: adult and peer response to student writing is crucial, student SEL is strengthened and supported through classroom writing, and reflective practices amplify student voice.

Kids like talking. Kids have opinions. Kids like talking about their opinions. But have them brainstorm about a topic for an essay or a project and they stare at you blankly and mumble "ah-uh-no." In this session, Skip Olson - second runner up of the 67th annual "Is It a Pumpkin or a Baby?" contest of Humboldt County in 1992 - will be your guide on how to get kids from weak, spoon-fed, intermittent drops to a torrential downpour of ideas (or maybe just a nice shower which, according to any Midwesterner, is something we could always use). Come for the strategies, stay for the increasingly bad puns.

SPARK: We are All Leaders: Finding Your Voice in ICTE (Nikki Smith); SPARK: Iowa Writing Project: Directions in Teaching and Learning (Sheila Benson and Kirstey Ewald); SPARK: From Breadcrumbs to U-Turns: Mapping Your Reading Journey (Stacy Haynes-Moore)
Friday October 11, 2024 9:15am - 10:05am CDT
  1. Iowa Council Teachers of English: Teachers are leaders by nature. We can lead a classroom, guide an entire group of students and manage all of the decisions and data that this requires without even thinking twice. Before we do it all again the next day. And right now, our state needs to hear from you. Our nation needs your story and your voice. Come learn about the many ways you can share your experience and your leadership within our organization at ICTE. Because you matter.

We are All Leaders

2. Iowa Writing Project: Directions in Teaching and Learning: Sheila Benson and Kirstey Ewald invite you to reflect on the four directions and natural elements as a way to consider how you might best fulfill your needs as a writer, teacher, learner, and leader. Each of these takes you on a particular professional learning path that might best fulfill what your spirit calls out for, what resonates within your soul, what beats within your hearts. They invite you to participate in one (or more!) of Iowa Writing Project’s offerings and find whatever it is you seek waiting for you there.

3. Breadcrumbs to U-Turns: What is your reading journey? What turns did you take to get here? What mountains or cliffs did you face as a child or teen reader? Create a map of your reading journey to notice your patterns, joys, and challenges. As an ELA teacher, use this activity with students and gain insights to their reading lives, to generate class discussion about reading/books, or extend students' reflections with writing.

Our Journey…All Students Will Learn at High Levels
Friday October 11, 2024 9:15am - 10:05am CDT
Four years ago, our team, partnered with our special education team, confronted our brutal reality that our outcomes in reading as measured by ISASP testing did not align with our mission statement: All students will learn at high levels. About 25% of our students in grades 3-11 were not yet proficient in ELA. We were all doing really good work, but something had to change if our mission statement was going to be something more than a poster on the wall. Join us to learn about our intense, systemic changes, especially what we’ve done at the high school that have led to more than 90% of our 9-11 students being proficient readers…and we’re still not done.

The Power of PLAY in the ELA Classroom
Friday October 11, 2024 9:15am - 10:05am CDT
Science tells us play improves optimism, perseverance, connection, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. Play, too, can guide students to higher-level, analytic thinking. In this session, two teachers will share how we've used play in our classrooms, from those full of reticent readers and reluctant writers to the AP classroom. Students (and adults) benefit from play as an onramp to creativity. Come to play, and leave with dozens of at-the-ready play ideas to enhance the learning in your classroom!

Holding the Tension of Opposites: How Embracing Ambiguity Wholeheartedly Can Recenter Us as English Educators
Friday October 11, 2024 9:15am - 10:05am CDT
Parker Palmer said, “The place where paradoxes are held together is in the teacher’s heart, and our inability to hold them is less a failure of technique than a gap in our inner lives.” The last several school years have brought many paradoxes and challenges to the classroom–most from outside sources that feel out of our control. A lot of us feel stuck–and a bit defeated. However, to get unstuck, we may need to turn inward and figure out how to embrace the ambiguity present in a human, helping profession. In this session, I’ll share both conceptual understandings from my masters research on teacher burnout and concrete strategies for setting boundaries from my learned experience. You’ll walk away with knowledge, power, and routines to bring your whole, conflicted, valuable self to your students each day.

KEYNOTE: Can I Have Your Attention––PLEASE!
Friday October 11, 2024 10:15am - 11:30am CDT
English teachers are constantly competing in what many call “the attention economy” to get students to look and listen so they can learn. In this keynote, Jim Burke will discuss attention as it relates to teaching in general and English in particular. But the threats to attention are not limited to just our students: teachers themselves frequently struggle to capture and keep their own attention. In this session, participants will examine what attention is, how it works, and what we can do to help students (and teachers) protect and develop this precious and limited resource. In addition, teachers will learn how to apply key aspects of attention to improve their students’ reading, writing, speaking, and learning skills. As part of the session, participants will examine their own classrooms, assignments, and instructional choices to find ways they might better “compete” for and keep students’ attention. bit.ly/ICTEkeynote

"You Shall Play It in a Mask": Why Elizabethan Writers Cloaked Activism in Codes and Quips
Friday October 11, 2024 1:00pm - 1:50pm CDT
As Megan Mayhew Bergman observes in _The Kenyon Review_, “While nearly all writing observes and processes the world around us, overtly socially-conscious writing is risky.” Many of the writers from the English Renaissance were as courageous as they were cunning, but current pedagogy often ignores the crucible of political intrigue and personal peril in which their witticisms were wielded. The Elizabethans’ affections for cryptology, rhetoric and wordplay created a synergy that often allowed them to avoid not just book bans, but beheadings! Come join in a celebration of risky writing as we sleuth the puns and politics of Shakespeare, Lanier, and Marlowe and find new appreciation for contemporary social poets like Gwendolyn Brooks.

Exploring high school students' experiences learning about the Syrian Civil War through literature and assisting with a home makeover for a refugee family in their community will provide both inspiration and a template for similar service projects.

Pre-Writing In The Age Of Ai: Ensuring Students Grow As Writers When They Just Want A Bot To Write It For Them
Friday October 11, 2024 2:00pm - 2:50pm CDT
Why do we still teach writing when Snapchat's AI will just write it for us? This session focuses on equipping students with pre-writing strategies that support them throughout a unit, reducing the temptation to rely solely on AI-generated essays. By building a robust student toolbox of effective pre-writing techniques, writing teachers can empower students to develop critical thinking, creativity, and writing skills.

Writing to Network: Helping Students Shine in Your Communities
Friday October 11, 2024 2:00pm - 2:50pm CDT
As a teacher of 10th-12th grade reluctant writers and presenters in a Composition course, I saw a need to go beyond traditional forms of essay writing. Data showed us that many students in our district do not go on to complete four-year degrees, and most of them stay in our community. Couple these pointers with the wild success of the show Hot Ones, and an idea was born! Learn how to empower your high school students to consider that their future community and career opportunities are waiting within your classroom!
