Iowa Writing Project: Directions in Teaching and Learning: Sheila Benson and Kirstey Ewald invite you to reflect on the four directions and natural elements as a way to consider how you might best fulfill your needs as a writer, teacher, learner, and leader. Each of these takes you on a particular professional learning path that might best fulfill what your spirit calls out for, what resonates within your soul, what beats within your hearts. They invite you to participate in one (or more!) of Iowa Writing Project’s offerings and find whatever it is you seek waiting for you there.

3. Breadcrumbs to U-Turns: What is your reading journey? What turns did you take to get here? What mountains or cliffs did you face as a child or teen reader? Create a map of your reading journey to notice your patterns, joys, and challenges. As an ELA teacher, use this activity with students and gain insights to their reading lives, to generate class discussion about reading/books, or extend students' reflections with writing.

Our Journey…All Students Will Learn at High Levels

Four years ago, our team, partnered with our special education team, confronted our brutal reality that our outcomes in reading as measured by ISASP testing did not align with our mission statement: All students will learn at high levels. About 25% of our students in grades 3-11 were not yet proficient in ELA. We were all doing really good work, but something had to change if our mission statement was going to be something more than a poster on the wall. Join us to learn about our intense, systemic changes, especially what we’ve done at the high school that have led to more than 90% of our 9-11 students being proficient readers…and we’re still not done.

The Power of PLAY in the ELA Classroom

Science tells us play improves optimism, perseverance, connection, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. Play, too, can guide students to higher-level, analytic thinking. In this session, two teachers will share how we've used play in our classrooms, from those full of reticent readers and reluctant writers to the AP classroom. Students (and adults) benefit from play as an onramp to creativity. Come to play, and leave with dozens of at-the-ready play ideas to enhance the learning in your classroom!

Parker Palmer said, “The place where paradoxes are held together is in the teacher’s heart, and our inability to hold them is less a failure of technique than a gap in our inner lives.” The last several school years have brought many paradoxes and challenges to the classroom–most from outside sources that feel out of our control. A lot of us feel stuck–and a bit defeated. However, to get unstuck, we may need to turn inward and figure out how to embrace the ambiguity present in a human, helping profession. In this session, I’ll share both conceptual understandings from my masters research on teacher burnout and concrete strategies for setting boundaries from my learned experience. You’ll walk away with knowledge, power, and routines to bring your whole, conflicted, valuable self to your students each day.

English teachers are constantly competing in what many call “the attention economy” to get students to look and listen so they can learn. In this keynote, Jim Burke will discuss attention as it relates to teaching in general and English in particular. But the threats to attention are not limited to just our students: teachers themselves frequently struggle to capture and keep their own attention. In this session, participants will examine what attention is, how it works, and what we can do to help students (and teachers) protect and develop this precious and limited resource. In addition, teachers will learn how to apply key aspects of attention to improve their students’ reading, writing, speaking, and learning skills. As Megan Mayhew Bergman observes in _The Kenyon Review_, “While nearly all writing observes and processes the world around us, overtly socially-conscious writing is risky.” Many of the writers from the English Renaissance were as courageous as they were cunning, but current pedagogy often ignores the crucible of political intrigue and personal peril in which their witticisms were wielded. The Elizabethans’ affections for cryptology, rhetoric and wordplay created a synergy that often allowed them to avoid not just book bans, but beheadings! Come join in a celebration of risky writing as we sleuth the puns and politics of Shakespeare, Lanier, and Marlowe and find new appreciation for contemporary social poets like Gwendolyn Brooks.

As a teacher of 10th-12th grade reluctant writers and presenters in a Composition course, I saw a need to go beyond traditional forms of essay writing. Data showed us that many students in our district do not go on to complete four-year degrees, and most of them stay in our community.
